Multistage triaxial compressive strength of intact rock with axial and radial deformation measurements (ASTM D7012)

Multistage triaxial tests is used for determination of the shear strength characteristics of intact rock core specimens subjected to varying confining stress states acting under constant axial load. In the multistage triaxial test the sample is subjected to a loading and unloading cycles to obtain the peak and residual strength from a single specimen. This method enables to conserve samples and to obtain more consistent strength data by eliminating sample variabilities for the construction of failure envelopes.  Test specimens shall be prepared under the ASTM D4543 standard to determine the dimensions and shape of the sample to be tested. Multistage triaxial compressive strength test is used to determine the shear strength and deformation characteristics of a rock and simulates the natural stress conditions of a rock mass.
